How Often Should You Be Posting On Your Blog? (Discussion + Advice) #Discussion #Posting #Advice #Blogging #Content #Sharing

Greetings! Welcome to yet another advice and discussion post here on Always Trust In Books. I have been considering the quality over quantity debate over the last few weeks. Is it worth spend time drafting enough posts to get one out each day or even multiple? Or to focus on several more solid pieces over the course of the week? I thought it would be best to put the subject out there to everyone just in case someone else is possibly thinking the same thing right about now.

Posting everyday is nice because it keeps me well motivated and up to date within the book community but to do so means diluting my posts because I do have a job, family and a mountain of books that threatens to crush me under its weight. Though posting a few times a week always makes me feel separated from the flow of everyone else. I don’t know if anyone gets what I am on about but I hope so. I have prepared the usual selection of questions for everyone to consider and answer in the comments. I love reading everyone’s thoughts, ideas and opinions on these matters. There are plenty of new and up-and-coming bloggers who are grateful for these insights too.

My Answers

Do you prefer to see longer, more in-depth, posts over quicker more basic pieces when looking at blogs?

I know it is not a strong start but it completely depends on time frames. I do like to get stuck into a beast of a post when I can, settle in and enjoy the blog’s views on books and such, but small is convenient when it comes to blogging. I often find that bite-size posts can be easy and more enjoyable for both authors and readers. When it comes to writing my own posts I feel as long as the content has meaning and energy, it will be appreciated but I do wish I could get into the more in-depth posts sometimes. Slowing down my work rate though would increase my sense of urgency which doesn’t suit a hobby blogger like myself. Blogging can be casual and enjoyable pastime or a job, it is just deciding where you want the blog to go. If blogging was my job then I would certainly increase the overall depth of my content.

Is posting everyday better for your blog than every so often?

It is for me but generally speaking, I am not so sure. If you have the time then absolutely but just furiously peddling out content you thought up on the spot for the sake of views can be such a grind that it might have an adverse effect on yourself, it certainly did with me. The main reason I try and post each day is that I love continuity and I feel if I stop then my commitment will falter but that is not applicable to everyone. People won’t leave you behind because your infrequent, they are more likely to get frustrated with repetitive and inconsequential posts. It is important to take a step back and look at your own posts once in a while and consider if you are on the right track for the kind of blogger you are right now, because it will change a lot.

Is quality more important than quantity when it comes to being a blogger?

That is something you need to decide for yourself as you gain experience as a blogger. After spending time writing this post, I feel that quality is the way I would recommend going but just because a post is small doesn’t mean you didn’t put just as much thought into it. Find your sweet spot and everything else will gradually fall into place. If you get too caught up or frustrated then it is time to take a step back and re-evaluate. I have done this quite a few times!

Do you feel out-of-touch if you only post once or twice a week instead of most days?

I really do and that is why I often get stuck in a rut when it comes to creating content. I have gone without posting for a couple of weeks and I feel so out of bounds when I return. I just need to find more avenues (and make more of an effort) of maintaining a presence in the book community and connecting with people while also taking time off. I am sure long time bloggers will agree that it can be hard at times. I am most comfortable when I am posting each day but that doesn’t apply to everyone. Everyone has their own speed.

Does everyone see smaller posts as a sign of lack of passion or enthusiasm?

Small posts sometimes take longer to craft than big ones. As long as your thoughts, efforts and opinions are genuine then people will pick up on your love for your content. I have been disappointed by smaller posts before, thinking that it could have been expanded, but that is the great thing about blogging, there are always more opportunities to build on things! If you are just banging out meh! posts to increase your views then it will catch up with you eventually. If you are invested in your posts then no matter the size, people will appreciate them.

Should new bloggers be worried about how much they are posting on their blogs each week?

I think most people will agree with me when I say, absolutely not! I increased my confidence through doing a handful of posts really well and building and streamlining my blogging practices. I promise that parts of blogging that feel laborious right now will fade away and you will have more time for the good stuff. Blogging is all about learning by doing. Keep doing what you are doing and you will get an idea of where your comfort zone lies when it comes to post depth. I have changed my mind over the years about how I run my blog so if you become uncomfortable then a change up is in order. I think this post is another turning point for me, to re-imagine what I want to do with Always Trust In Books.

Thank you for popping in to see another discussion here on ATIB. I hope you can get stuck into the comments and help out those who are unsure about their blogging output. I find I keep coming back to this argument and the best option is to put it out there to everyone to see the general opinion. There is absolutely no judgement here, I do these posts to clear minds and give advice to those who are as concerned about these things as I was when I set out. I can’t wait to see everyone’s contributions, I will see you all in the comments!

  1. Honestly I think that everyone finds their own blogging schedule and what makes them happy. For me I enjoy posting daily. In fact, I have so many blog ideas that if I didn’t post daily things would get so pushed back and behind that I would have a mini heart attack. Although I do take a hiatus from time to time and that’s important to think about too!

  2. I don’t think anyone should worry about how much or what they are posting. I mean, this should be for fun! 🙂
I don’t usually like very long posts / articles, but it’s just my attention span, really. Nothing to do with the content. If it’s broken down with pictures and gifs and stuff, i can focus longer. Yes, i’m still wondering how i’m able to read books 😀

Short posts don’t mean the person didn’t care. Sometimes less is more. Getting repetitive just for the sake of more word count is counterproductive.

    I don’t really have a schedule, post maybe 2-3 times a week.

In all fairness, with the amount of blogs i follow, i don’t think i’d notice if someone started posting less for a while. It has nothing to do with them. Again, it’s my attention span.

  3. I post book reviews and content posts on my blog. This means I don’t necessarily post everyday and I’m currently taking more of a back seat on tours, this means I am only posting 3-4 times a week for reviews and don’t feel out of it at all. I still share other bloggers posts so this means I still keep in touch with what’s going on.
I think the pressure of finding something for everyday would get a bit too much for me especially at the moment with work.
When I started blogging 18months ago I found that I would go days without a post, yes it meant that it took longer to get followers but, as my confidence grew so did the amount of posts. Learning about blogging slowly gave me time to enjoy this new found hobby rather than stressing over it.
Great discussion post btw 😊 xx

  4. I think its down to the individual, I do get what you mean about feeling out of the loop, when I decided to get more focused with my blog this year 2 posts a week suited me but as I got quicker at reading and writing I upped to 3 posts a week, now if I know I’m going to have a busy week ahead with work or the kids I try to get my main posts done and scheduled ahead of time so any other posts are a bonus 🙂

  5. Quality, always quality. I don’t have time to blog more than a couple of times a month; I find that trying to hit a schedule that is to an extent artificial seriously degrades the quality of what I write. Let’s face it, the world is not short of memes and reviews. When we put stuff out it should really matter.

  6. I enjoy posting daily but that’s mainly because I use the holidays to get content together for my blog. I often have stuff scheduled so I don’t need to worry about my blog when I’m at work. I have a super busy job, so it’s nice to know my blog can run itself almost when I’m busy! There are things on my blog that don’t get as many views as others but I don’t do it for views, personally. I like blogging what I want to blog and long may that continue! 🙂
