About Katherine McIntyre

Katherine McIntyre is a feisty chick with a big attitude despite her short stature. She writes stories featuring snarky women, ragtag crews, and men with bad attitudes—high chance for a passionate speech thrown into the mix. As an eternal geek and tomboy who’s always stepped to her own beat, she’s made it her mission to write stories that represent the broad spectrum of people out there, from different cultures and races to all varieties of men and women. Easily distracted by cats and sugar.

About Of Tinkers and Technomancers

When technomancer Theo Whitfield joins forces with the insufferable, gorgeous Silas Kylock to find her missing sister, their heated exchanges turn from irritation to desire…

When technomancer Theo Whitfield’s sister goes missing, she’s forced to work alongside an arrogant prat she’s long despised, the tinker Silas Kylock. Her sister Ellie nicked his clockwork doll, and Theo needs his help to track the stolen merchandise and, by proxy, Ellie. However, the more time they spend together, the more she sees Silas as the man she’d run through the streets of Islington with and not the insufferable gentleman he’s become.
Theo’s not the only one afflicted. Silas never forgot the loyal, stubborn woman whose temper he can’t help but spark, and as their search grows more dire, her dedication to her family inspires him to make sacrifices of his own. So, when the hunt erupts into a deadly confrontation with the gangs of Islington, Theo and Silas aren’t just risking their hearts—their lives are on the line.

Character Archetypes in Steampunk

Dive into a steampunk read and what sort of characters can you expect? Beyond gentlemen and ladies in Victorian formal wear, there are an array of archetypes that tend to crop up in steampunk novels.
The airship pirate or vagabond is a fan favourite, and one of my personal favourites as well. Everyone loves the rogue, Han Solo-esque character, and they’re a necessary part of any adventure. With the inventiveness of steampunk and how common airships are as a mode of transport, it only fits that the pirates are no longer of the sea, but of the sky. You can explore all of the fun aspects of a seafaring adventure but with a whole different perspective, which allows further exploration into steampunk tech.
Tinkers and mad scientists are another integral part of steampunk novels, especially given the focus on creative technology. One of the most charming elements of steampunk is the mix of antiquated technology with modern or futuristic, leading to a whole array of different creations like clockwork automatons, ray-guns, and analytical engines. How could those unique discoveries be uncovered and developed without characters like the tinker or the mad scientist and their latest, greatest inventions?
Lords and ladies are the other sorts of characters to make an appearance in steampunk novels. Since a large portion of them are set in Victorian England, the class structure transfers over. The nobles had more disposable income to fund grand adventures, get involved in schemes and soirees, which make them perfect inclusions for any steampunk read.
If you’re looking to dive into a story with vagabonds and tinkers, my latest book, Of Tinkers and Technomancers, Whitfield Files #1, is a great place to start.
