Character Archetypes in Steampunk
Dive into a steampunk read and what sort of characters can you expect? Beyond gentlemen and ladies in Victorian formal wear, there are an array of archetypes that tend to crop up in steampunk novels.
The airship pirate or vagabond is a fan favourite, and one of my personal favourites as well. Everyone loves the rogue, Han Solo-esque character, and they’re a necessary part of any adventure. With the inventiveness of steampunk and how common airships are as a mode of transport, it only fits that the pirates are no longer of the sea, but of the sky. You can explore all of the fun aspects of a seafaring adventure but with a whole different perspective, which allows further exploration into steampunk tech.
Tinkers and mad scientists are another integral part of steampunk novels, especially given the focus on creative technology. One of the most charming elements of steampunk is the mix of antiquated technology with modern or futuristic, leading to a whole array of different creations like clockwork automatons, ray-guns, and analytical engines. How could those unique discoveries be uncovered and developed without characters like the tinker or the mad scientist and their latest, greatest inventions?
Lords and ladies are the other sorts of characters to make an appearance in steampunk novels. Since a large portion of them are set in Victorian England, the class structure transfers over. The nobles had more disposable income to fund grand adventures, get involved in schemes and soirees, which make them perfect inclusions for any steampunk read.
